Hello! My name is Tom Silldorff and I am a prospective chemistry major and a member of the great Princeton class of 2023! I am a big fan of the outdoors, especially backpacking and swimming, and I play ultimate frisbee. I was a tutor all through high school, at first just helping friends and small groups of people in my free time. After a while a teacher took notice and told me about the new peer tutoring program at my school. I spent junior and senior year tutoring in both these formal and informal capacities, working with students from 7th grade all the way through 12th grade. I love tutoring math and the sciences, especially chemistry, as these are some of the subjects I find to be the most fun and enjoyable, and because these subjects are great ways to improve one’s problem solving abilities. I also enjoy tutoring history and English, as these subjects often involve a more discussion-based approach that allows for the development of a strong connection between the student and tutor. Going beyond academic instruction, I have been a swim instructor at my local summer camp for the past 5 years, working with children from ages three to twelve. My experience with tutoring and teaching has led me to consider the possibility of becoming a teacher after I graduate. I think that striving to help the next generation through education is an incredibly important role that educators take on, and I feel immense personal satisfaction from seeing a student improve their skillset and discovering that they may actually enjoy the subject that they once found boring or distasteful.
