Madison

Hi, I'm Madison! After living in Nashville, TN for six years I am excited to return to my beloved home state. I graduated from Vanderbilt University in 2017, where my studies focused on Neuroscience and Spanish. After spending two more years at Vanderbilt working in an Autism Sensory Neuroimaging lab as a research analyst, I am excited to begin a new academic chapter as a Doctoral student at Northeastern University studying Criminology and Justice Policy. My parents used to joke that when I grew up I was going to be a forever student – and it turns out that they were right! It's been a winding road to connect my love of teaching and learning to an academic passion and reflecting on my journey brings me back to the quality of education I received in elementary, middle, and high school.

My teaching experience ranges from lecture-style lessons for large groups of high school students to individualized SAT/ACT prep and subject matter tutoring. I am looking forward to meeting students where they are on their academic paths and not only focusing on the subject material at hand, but also helping students access an intrinsic motivation to learn and succeed. My background in the hard sciences, combined with an insatiable love of literature and history allow me to relate to a wide range of students. For me, tutoring is about inspiring confidence in addition to subject material mastery.

Answering the typical "what do you do for fun?" question is hard because the answer I want to give sounds cheesy – for fun, I learn. In my free time I love to read as much as I can, both fiction and nonfiction. Additionally, I practice yoga and am training for my first marathon. The physicality of these activities helps me learn more about myself and my connection to my body! Each day is an opportunity to learn something new, and I know the students I work with will teach me more than I teach them.
