Private Foreign Language Tutoring
Since 2005, we have helped students improve their confidence and grades in Spanish, French, German, Latin, and Mandarin Chinese. (And if your child needs help with a different language, let us know – we can probably find someone.) Our clients have even included other professionals in the field of education - teachers, Ivy League professors, and members of the Princeton University administration. Whether your child is struggling or simply looking for enrichment tutoring, our exceptional private language tutors will create a customized approach tailored specifically for your needs. After each session, you’ll receive a detailed progress report to track your child’s improvement in their language of study (view a real recap from one of our French tutoring sessions).
What Parents Say about Our Language Tutors
We were contacted by the mother of a seventh grader at Princeton Charter School to help her daughter with French, English, and math. Her daughter is a B student and has good work habits but her confidence waxes and wanes. Personality-wise, she is on the shy side. She especially has difficulty with foreign languages (French) and has mild attention deficit disorder.
We matched the student with Lauren, a public policy at Princeton University who scored a perfect 800 on the SAT French Subject test, 5s on AP French Language and AP French Literature, and received numerous French awards. Here are two messages we received over the course of their work together:
“Lauren seems very well-matched to meet my daughter’s needs in school. B will greatly benefit from a tutor who is such a Francophile and also accomplished in so many areas of study and interest.”
“Hi Lauren, it’s music to a mother’s ear to hear that her daughter got on a roll with le Français yesterday. Thank you.”

Why Do Students Struggle with Foreign Languages?
In an increasingly globalized world, one of the best advantages a person can have is the ability to speak a second language. Many schools offer foreign-language classes, but the few hours a week spent in the classroom is usually not enough to develop proficiency in a language.
The grammar of a foreign language can be profoundly different from English. For example, in English, a great deal of information is conveyed via word order. But in other languages, some of that information might be conveyed via different word endings added onto the verb. Some languages, like Mandarin Chinese, involve completely new concepts like pitched tones that change the meaning of the word. It takes a long time to make the leap from merely hearing an undistinguished mass of unfamiliar sounds to being able to pick out recognizable words. Learning a new language means more than just memorizing lots of new vocabulary. There is a huge amount of mental adjustment involved too.
Moreover, the grammar of new languages is taught in comparison to English grammar structures. If a student is already weak in English grammar, learning the grammar of another language in this comparative way is going to be tough.
Our language tutors can improve your child’s language skills by working on both writing and speaking abilities. One thing to note is that some of our clients have requested that our tutors be native speakers, and indeed, some of them are. However, many of our clients have actually benefitted from tutors who are not native, but who have studied the language extensively. Having studied the language from the outside, they know what aspects of it are challenging for English speakers, and can more easily relate to your child.
