Private Writing Tutoring

Since 2005, we have helped students improve their confidence and grades in writing, a skill that is needed in nearly every class and subject area, not to mention college applications. Our clients have included other professionals in the field of education - teachers, Ivy League professors, and members of the Princeton University administration. Whether your child is struggling or simply looking for enrichment tutoring, our exceptional writing tutors will create a customized approach tailored specifically for your needs. After each session, you’ll receive a detailed progress report to track your child’s improvement in writing (view a real recap from one of our writing tutoring sessions).

What Parents Say about Our Writing Tutors

We were contacted by the father of a sixth grader at Princeton Day School to help his daughter improve her grammar and writing skills. One of our goals was to make her writing more mature. We matched the daughter with Lauren, a Public Policy major at Princeton University and one of Princeton Tutoring’s English specialists. Here’s the message we received after a year of working together:

“We are writing to commend our tutor Lauren, who has been tutoring our daughter in English. Lauren is a terrific teacher! We noticed a significant progress in our daughter’s performance, which we attribute to Lauren’s tutoring. We would like to continue studying with Lauren this year.”

Both Kevin and I started tutoring in high school and continued throughout our college years at Princeton and beyond. We chose to tutor because it was extremely rewarding and something we truly enjoyed.

Princeton Tutoring was born out of the early successes of our former clients and our desire to provide high-quality tutoring to other families. We understand better than most what parents are looking for, what children need, and which qualities make the best tutors.

Thank you for considering us. We look forward to speaking with you and working with your child to help fulfill his or her academic potential.

Sincerely,

Why Do Students Struggle with Writing?

Writing is a critical skill that underpins academic success in virtually every subject. No matter how bright a student is, if they can’t get their thoughts across on paper, they will struggle with homework, written assignments, and tests. The creators of the SAT have recognized this and in 2005 incorporated the former SAT II Writing test into the regular SAT.

Translating one’s thoughts into a coherent message on paper is not easy for everyone, but can absolutely be improved with practice and guidance. For example, some students might not initially realize that there are different types of academic writing. The expectations and requirements for written work in English class versus biology versus history are different. There are also many different types of essays – expository, persuasive, research, formal, creative, etc. Each type has its own approach. On top of that, some students struggle with grammar and vocabulary.

Our tutors are all strong writers themselves, and can help your student become one as well. Many of our tutors are published authors, essay-contest winners, and university writing award recipients. And, our writing students have ranged from third graders to high schoolers to business professionals who needed a brush-up.
