Private Reading Comprehension Tutoring

Since 2005, we have helped students improve their confidence and grades in all aspects of language arts, including reading comprehension (also known as critical reading). Our clients have even included other professionals in the field of education - teachers, Ivy League professors, and members of the Princeton University administration. Whether your child is struggling or simply looking for enrichment tutoring, our exceptional reading comprehension tutors will create a customized approach tailored specifically for your needs. After each session, you’ll receive a detailed progress report to track your child’s improvement with reading comprehension (view a real recap from one of our reading comprehension tutoring sessions).

What Parents Say about Our Reading Comprehension Tutors

We were contacted by the parent of an 11th grader at West Windsor Plainsboro South to help his daughter prepare for the AP English Language exam, with a specific focus on improving her reading comprehension and writing skills. We matched the daughter with Arlyn, an English major at Princeton University who scored a perfect 800 on the SAT Critical Reading, perfect 5s on several AP tests, and had several years of tutoring experience. Here’s what the daughter said:

“Hi Arlyn, I just wanted to thank you for all your help with AP language! I felt good after the AP test and I just found out that I got a 5!”

Why Do Students Struggle with Reading Comprehension?

Reading comprehension or critical reading skills are extremely important, and typically developed over a long period of time. Among many other situations, the critical reading section of the SAT is the most difficult for many students. This is true not just of ESL students, which you might expect, but for native English speakers as well. Moreover, high scores on the critical reading section of the SAT are considered particularly impressive from a college admissions standpoint.
One of the most important ways to develop critical reading skills is through reading. It’s important to read many different types of materials, and to consciously and critically analyze them, to improve one’s ability in this area. Vocabulary is important as well. If you can’t understand the words, it’s much harder to understand and analyze the meaning. Our tutors can teach students a number of strategies to improve their comprehension of many different types of passages.
