For our first tutoring session, I wanted to cover a little bit of all three English sections of the SSAT (Verbal, Reading comprehension, and Writing) in order to get a sense of where A is right now and where she might need the most improvement.
We began with reading comprehension, where we discussed some strategies for how to analyze a passage for full comprehension in order to be able to move through the questions with ease. In our upcoming lessons, we will probably go into further detail and do some guided practice.
In the verbal section, A seems very strong right now. This section of the SSAT primarily tests for vocabulary, and I was happy to see that A seems to be doing quite well in this area. I've urged her to continue studying her vocab as she has been doing, and while we will certainly touch upon the verbal section again I do not feel that it is an area we need to focus on too much at this time.
Finally we worked on writing, where we discussed what role the essay will play in the SSAT and her school applications, and what the readers are going to be looking for. I've emphasized to her that they are not expecting a polished final draft in 25 minutes, but that she should try to focus mainly on organization and staying on topic. I had her create an outline for a sample essay prompt in order to practice thinking about organization. Part of her homework assignment is to turn this outline into a full essay, which we will analyze more closely in our next session.
A seemed very focused and motivated during our session. It was a pleasure working with her today. We're going to be doing a lot of work from her SSAT study book, which I think is great. However eventually I think we will run out of practice questions from this book, and may need to look into getting another book which contains additional practice tests, which we can work on in pieces during the tutoring sessions. For now I think we are fine, but we'll discuss it when the time comes.
