Material Covered During the Session:

During this session we worked on a very comprehensive outline for R’s history essay on war crimes, in which it was his task to give examples of war crimes from World War II and then decide whether the term “war crime” was a useful category/definition.  In the end, he chose the Holocaust as a war crime, decided the atomic bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima were not war crimes, and reasoned that the Allied firebombings could have been considered war crimes if the Allies had lost, but were not war crimes because they won.

Writing the outline and doing some research was nice, but I think the best part of the session was getting to talk with him about how we know what’s bad and what’s good, especially when the ones who write history are usually the ones who “won.”  The firebombing example especially was a good opportunity to talk about how context figures to heavily into justice, and how history could be told lots of different ways.
