This week N and I focused on trigonometric functions and how to graph them. We started by looking at each coefficient of a trigonometric function and defining what it means in terms of amplitude, reflection, period, range, horizontal shift, vertical shift, compression, and expansion. We went through two different methods, the “five key points” method and a more visual approach, in order to figure out what works best for N. Graphing complicated functions with a horizontal shift and horizontal expansion is certainly a challenge, but N grasped a better understanding the ways certain coefficients in an equation of a function impact the graph of the function. We went through a variety of examples after defining the coefficients, and began moving onto graphing cofunctions.
N would much rather rely on memorization tactics that would allow her to plug numbers into a given strategy, but she is getting much better and relying on her conceptual understanding, which will help her tremendously on exams inside and outside of her Pre Calculus class.
