We prepared for V's upcoming test this Wednesday on preterite tense usage and irregulars. She brought her worksheets and we went through all of them category by category, highlighting the differences between the categories. I also tried to help explain the origins of some of these irregularities (most of them ore orthographical.) I recommended that she just drill the stem-changes, but so that she would have something to look back at on the night before her test we made a graphic of the different categories of irregulars.
It was wonderful meeting you and your daughter today. She very bright and a real sweetheart. I'm impressed by her self-awareness, sometimes knowing exactly what you need to work on is half the battle and she seems very focused.
I understand that she's not happy with her current Spanish teacher's explanations (or rather, lack there of). I find often non-native speakers have an easier time explaining why certain grammatical rules are the way they are and I hope this is where I can lend a hand, having learned Spanish as a second language myself!
